How to find your IP address

IP address is a unique address that every computer has on the internet. You can also obtain an IP address if you are simply connected to a network. However, the IP address that you hold may or may not be the one you log on the internet with. With a simple command on the terminal or command prompt, you can find out your local and international IP address.

Finding local IP address

To know your local IP address, simply open the command prompt. To do this, first press the windows and R key simultaneously on your keyboard:
This brings up the "Run" dialog box. It looks something like this:

Now, type "cmd" in the run dialog box (without the quotes). That should lead you to the command prompt, which is a black window with a cursor pointer where you can type in. Now, type "ipconfig" into the command prompt, so that it looks like this:

Now press enter. If you are connected via wire, i.e. Ethernet cable, then you must look for the IPV4 address on the LAN adapter, otherwise, look for IPV4 address under the Wireless LAN adapter. An example of this is, I am currently connected to the internet via Ethernet cable. So, my IP address looks like this:

As you can see, I am currently not connected to the wireless interface on my laptop. If you are connected to multiple networks, you can have multiple IP addresses. In such a case, you can see IP addresses on multiple interfaces.

Finding your International IP address:

International IP address means the IP address that you use on the internet. Your Router automatically does the job of mapping your internal IP address to the international one so you don't have to go through any hassle. There are free websites where you can see your international IP address. An example of such a website is https://www.whatismyip.com/ . This website shows your international IP address free of cost.

In this way, you can find out your IP address on your computer.
